About the Industry
Expected to Grow

Gross revenue for U.S travel sector is expected to continue growing by at least 1% but accelerate to 3% in 2027 and 2028. This steady growth results in forecasted spending of 1.37 trillion in 2026 and 1.42 trillion in 2027 signaling a full recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed expansion.
Online travel intermediaries, including online travel agencies (OTAs), metasearch services and travel management companies (TMCs) (supported mainly by GDS technology) represent a significant source of indirect business for most travel suppliers, and delivered over two thirds of overall industry gross revenue in 2024. Phocuswright’s 2025 industry projection called for online bookings to comprise 72% of the market.
Indirect distribution, with $690 billion in 2025 gross bookings, is up 39% from 2019. By 2027, indirect distribution is projected to reach $795 billion in gross bookings worldwide.
